Installation video of Paula Barr “Twilight Interlude” for the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center, Mobile, AL, 1995
Since the mid-1980s, Paula Barr has been engaged in public works—her photography on a grand scale. As the originator of glass-photo tile murals, for which she holds a patent, Barr has completed countless projects including commissions for the John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, Penn Station, New York, the Columbus Circle station, MTA Subway, New York, Mobile Infirmary Medical Center, Alabama, and the Bellevue and Goldwater Hospitals, New York.
In a featured article in The Mobile Press Register in 1988, she explained that the Penn Station project was one the her most challenging to date. The 52-foot mural featured panoramic views of the four directions from atop One Penn Plaza—north, south, east and west directions together in one.
In 1995, Barr was commissioned to create Twilight Interlude for the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center in Mobile, Alabama. The 10 x 74-foot photo-mural, composed of glass-photo tiles, earned the distinction of being listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest photograph in the world.
